A Wish That Flows From Year to Year

A golden koi swims through curling waves, its tail sweeping across the red packet. Above it, a second koi appears in a quieter shade of red. Tilt the packet toward the light and the gold catches along the crests of the waves.

The inscription 年年有余 (nián nián yǒu yú) wishes the recipient abundance year after year. In Mandarin, the word for fish (鱼) sounds like the word for surplus (余). The koi carries that wish into the design. When you hand someone this angpao at Chinese New Year, you’re wishing them a year with enough to enjoy and a little more to share.
