May Good Fortune Keep Flowing

Two fish turn toward each other in a swirl of red and copper waves. Follow the current down the ang pao and you’ll find four characters, each framed by a circle that touches the next. Together they read 年年有余 (nián nián yǒu yú), a Lunar New Year wish for abundance year after year.

The fish are part of the greeting. In Mandarin, the word for fish (鱼) sounds like the word for surplus (余). The pair swimming through the design gives that wordplay a form you can see before you read it.

When you hand this ang pao to someone, the design carries a wish of its own. May the year ahead bring you enough to live well, and a little extra to share.
